The goals of this event are to:
1. Learn about the latest eating disorder research.
This engaging discussion will be led by Boise State University’s Dr. Mary Pritchard. Dr. Pritchard is a Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Psychological Science at Boise State University, and manager of the Body Image Lab. Her expertise is in experimental psychology, focusing on varying factors influencing body image dissatisfaction and disordered eating behaviors in students.
2. Learn how to recognize signs & symptoms.
Presented by Caley Featherstone, MS, LCPC, and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, this presentation will provide participants with a basic understanding of eating disorders and disordered eating behaviors through psychoeducation. Key signs and symptoms of eating disorders will be discussed through a biopsychosocial model to understand eating disorder etiology and maintenance factors. Additionally, participants will be introduced to several transdiagnostic treatments for eating disorders, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), equipping them with practical knowledge on how treatment for eating disorders work.
3. Learn how to have difficult conversations about eating disorders.
This presentation is led by Amy Roberts, LCSW, from Boise State Counseling Services. She will focus on how to have crucial conversations about eating and body image concerns. Key topics will be covered, such as preparing for the conversation, using the Oreo cookie method of communication to balance constructive feedback with positivity, and avoiding harmful or triggering language. Additionally, we’ll discuss strategies for addressing defensiveness, hostility, or strong emotions that may arise, and how to conclude the conversation on a positive and empowering note. The content draws on principles from The Body Positive, Health at Every Size, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and the book Crucial Conversations.
4. Learn about new movements in eating disorder prevention & Boise State’s resources.
Laci Whipple, an MA Counseling Student-Intern and eating disorder professional, will be discussing eating disorder prevention efforts on the Boise State campus, such as body image course and workshop offerings, resources, Body Acceptance Week efforts, and new programs available to students.

The further an eating disorder provider goes in their career, the more difficult their questions become. Because eating disorder treatment and best practices are still evolving, case consultation with peers and more experienced providers is a crucial tool when treatment decisions are challenging, boundaries are muddy, and ethical issues arise. In this advanced session, veteran eating disorder dietitian Jessica Setnick will offer consultation regarding cases brought by participants and address three topics that even experts disagree on: team treatment, the definition of “recovery,” and harm reduction.
Learning objectives. Based on the content of the workshop participants will be able to:
1. Consider how to keep a patient’s best interest at the forefront in situations where other providers seem to step beyond their professional scope or refuse to participate as a team.
2. Describe the benefits and drawbacks of a field-wide consensus definition of “recovery” as opposed to allowing individuals to define it for themselves.
3. Describe the benefits and drawbacks of harm reduction approaches for clients with active eating disorders.

A Recipe for Mental Health: How Food Functions in the Brain (1 CE)
Ali Beckman MS, RD, LD, CEDS-C, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, Alsana Director of Clinical Nutrition & Movement Services
LOCATION: Virtual option via Zoom & In-Person Webinar Viewing
Webinar viewing to take place in Boise, Idaho, at Idaho State University, Room #TBD
Without balanced nutrition and food flexibility, the brain cannot adequately communicate with the rest of the body. Among other things, this greatly affects changes in behavioral health. The theme of food flexibility can be applied to fit the needs and diagnoses in behavioral health; mental health, substance use disorders, and eating disorders. Behavioral health is positively impacted when we can neutralize how we see food, use a non-diet approach, and learn how to eat without judgment. This presentation will identify how each diagnosis can benefit from nutrition intervention, balanced eating, and nutrition rehabilitation, all within the lens of focusing on food flexibility. We will also explore the different aspects of food flexibility and how it can be applied to behavioral health.
Objectives:
1. Identify what food flexibility is and how it can be applied differently within the different behavioral health diagnoses.
2. Define nutrition psychiatry and outline the necessary nutrients for brain function and neurotransmitter production.
3. Explain the connection between food and mood in relation to the neurotransmitters.
4. Learn insight to help the client acknowledge the intersection of grief and hope.
5. Define different dietary approaches to help with mental health and mood stabilization.
